S.T.A.R, in partnership with @theglasshouse_newcanaan and @carriagebarnartscenter , is excited to invite students to participate in the fourth annual Fairfield County Student Social Justice Art Showcase. This event celebrates how art, design, and architecture can inspire conversations about social justice. This is not a competition and ALL art is featured at a fun Opening Reception in November!

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
All students from K-college, from any town in Fairfield County, CT, are welcome! Students share their creativity by submitting artwork that reflects a social justice topic that’s important to them.

WHAT KIND OF ART CAN BE SUBMITTED?
We welcome all forms of art, including paintings, drawings, and photography, mixed media and sculpture, videos (including TikTok-style) and even architectural designs.

When art is ready, students give it a name and write a short description explaining what their art and social justice topic means to them and why it’s important. This description will be displayed alongside their art in the gallery.

Inspiring talk at New Canaan Library with Rita Daniels, descendant of Harriet Tubman, in conversation with Mendi Blue Paca, CEO & President of the Fairfield County Community Foundation. Earlier, Daniels shared Tubman stories with kids who then created Juneteenth-themed art.

Join us at the New Canaan Library at 6:30pm this Tuesday where Rita Daniels, great-great-great grandniece of Harriet Tubman, will share a fuller picture of this inspiring and illuminating key figure in our history. Daniels will be in conversation with Mendi Blue Paca, President & CEO of the Fairfield County Community Foundation.

There’s also a separate program for children (K-5) at 4-5pm at the library where Daniels will share stories and the kids can do a Juneteenth-themed art project!

The weather remarkably held out for yesterday’s Juneteenth celebration on the lawn at @newcanaanmuseum. Many pics to follow but before heading into the weekend we wanted to send our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors/supporters at @mybankwell, @theglasshouse_newcanaan, @newcanaanlibrary, @newcanaanite, @nchs.slobs and @newcanaanrotary.

Also thanks to numerous individual volunteers who helped immensely, @newcanaanpolice for assisting with the flag raising, @stmarksnewcanaan for allowing guest parking, @connectgodsacre for the table borrows, and @newcanaanmuseum for our 4th year at their beautiful setting.

We also thank @townofnewcanaan for recognizing this federal and state holiday on a local level with a town Juneteenth proclamation from First Selectman Dionna Carlson. (Town offices were closed in celebration. )

The Interfaith Council of New Canaan will mark Martin Luther King Day with its 23rd Annual Celebration of his life United Methodist Church, 165 South Avenue
January 20th at 10am

The event celebrates Dr. King’s achievements as a civil rights leader recognized throughout the world, including his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 “for his non-violent struggle for civil rights for the African-American population.”

According to Jen Zonis, Town Council member and the Interfaith Council’s president since 2018, the service will feature inspiring music and speakers from local and nearby communities, along with music performed by the Pivot Men’s Choir.
In addition, two scholars from ABC New Canaan, and its Resident Director Khanisha Moore, will perform with an ensemble. Pastor Richard Williams of Pivot Ministries in Bridgeport will be the keynote speaker and will be joined by other clergy from New Canaan houses of worship.
Donations will benefit the New Canaan Food Bank and non-perishable items will be gratefully accepted.

After that head in over to the Y in Bridgeport, New Canaan or Wilton to join S.T.A.R in an MLK Celebration and community building activity appropriate for all ages. Free. See link in bio to learn more and register (so we have enough supplies!)

New! Please join S.T.A.R., The Glass House, and Carriage Barn Arts Center for a super cool art workshop with amazing local artists Butch Quick and Jahmane West. These artists use their art to inspire change, and now they want to inspire YOU!

📅 When: Sunday, November 24, 3:00–4:30 PM
📍 Where: Carriage Barn, New Canaan

Here’s the fun part: you’ll work together to create a giant mixed-media masterpiece using paints, photos, magazines, and other fun materials. We even have a selfie printer so you can snap, edit, and add your own photos to the art. How cool is that? 🤩

This workshop is FREE, open to all ages (even adults can join in the fun!), and perfect for anyone who loves being creative. Just be sure to register (see link in bio) so we have enough art supplies for everyone. But drop ins welcome.

Student artists can take their showcase art home after the workshop!

New! Adult Book Club starting November 4th. Join us each Monday via Zoom or in person at the New Canaan Library to discuss Zaina Ararat’s debut novel “You Exist Too Much” which has received rave reviews.

Mark your calendar! S.T.A.R is thrilled to present the Connecticut premiere of the critically acclaimed documentary, Rising Hope, directed by New Canaan-raised Theo Avgerinos.

The film will be screened at The New Canaan Playhouse on Tuesday, October 29, with showings at 5p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Each screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Avgerinos and participants featured in the film. Filmgoers are invited to continue the discussion at a reception in the theater’s upstairs bar area.

“This is more than just a documentary—it’s a testament to the enduring human spirit in the face of historical and social inequities,” says Avgerinos, whose filmmaking roots trace back to his time at New Canaan High School. This documentary was inspired by his New Canaan Congregational Church Youth Group 2000 trip to Indianola, Mississippi. Though the film is set in the Mississippi Delta, its themes of resilience, community action, and the power of hope transcend regional borders. “The message resonates across the country, urging viewers to reflect on how we can all be part of the change within our communities,” Avgerinos adds.

S.T.A.R. invites the community to join this powerful event, which not only celebrates an extraordinary film but also opens the door to critical conversations about race relations and activism.
